A Short History of Abstract Paintings

Kotaro first drafts his paintings in photoshop before executing them in paint.

Mixed media artist Andrew Crane creates abstract paintings which combine a unique approach with unusual materials. Crane uses a mixture of cement and varnish to cover the canvas, before embellishing the surface with oil and acrylic symbols. The combination of colour washes and typography creates a visual poem, with letters and numbers becoming clues to be deciphered. In Scrawling (2023), tangled letters are etched into the surface of the canvas suggesting a cave painting or modern pavement.

British artist Damien Hirst seeks to bring conceptualism to a wider audience and he has had many successful art exhibitions, notably at the Tate Modern, where he was the most well-received solo exhibition in Tate history.
