Into The Fold:
Exploring the narrative potential of geometric form
Ruth Philo employs grid-like structures to explore the possibilities of colour, using folded triangular forms to create “a dance between hues.” Her contemplative works invite meditation and suggest the potential for transformation, echoing the spiritual resonance of medieval and Renaissance painting through a contemporary language of surface, colour and materiality.
Sabrina Brouwers uses elementary geometric and architectural forms, along with materials drawn from the urban landscape, to explore the psychological impact of visual simplicity. Working from a mathematically plotted grid, her practice examines the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. Each composition is shaped by a balance of intuition and strategy, a system challenged through complex layering; a dialogue between emergence and disappearance is triggered.
Using custom resin formulas and syringed mark-making, Taya De La Cruz creates jewel-like works composed of thousands of intentional marks and meticulous handwritten text, sometimes only legible under magnification. Her art invites viewers to slow down, reflect, and engage with themes of psychology, performance, and legacy.
Jo Hummel’s work explores reductionism through symbols, geometry, and colour. Rooted in principles of sacred geometry, natural cycles and ritual, her practice reflects ancient concepts of emptiness and possibility. Using paper, an everyday, ephemeral material, she builds layered, sculptural paintings through weaving, joinery and collage. These works balance precision with spontaneity, each piece capturing fragments of the human condition and the subconscious within formal abstraction.
