A Short History of Abstract Paintings

Abstract paintings and the pursuit of abstract art emerged towards the beginning of the 20th century. With the developments of avant-garde art movements, abstract art was born out of a desire to approach art in a non-figurative and non-objective manner. Rejecting realist representation and the traditions of realist painting, abstract painting has since endured as one of the most prominent and influential styles in modern art.

Abstract art is manifested in so many other different styles. It spans Cubism, Minimalism, and everything in between. Today, abstract paintings stand amongst some of the most famous artworks in the world. From Rothko’s iconic colour field paintings and Pollock’s vast Abstract Expressionist pieces, to Mondrian’s geometric abstract works, abstract art offers painters, makers and artists an open-ended sense of freedom.

Browse through our collection and discover the sheer depth of style, scale, colour and brushwork our abstract artists work across.

Abstract Paintings For Sale on Rise Art

At Rise Art, we feature an impressive array of abstract paintings for sale, crafted by talented contemporary artists who push the boundaries of abstraction.

Victoria Achache focuses on colour and the interaction of colour throughout her abstract paintings. The seemingly arbitrary placement of colour works in harmony with the figurative elements of her work, creating mood in each of her paintings. At times, the abstract and the figurative collide and in Cumulus, Victoria shows a dramatic pairing of abstract colour and space from which mysterious figures seem to emerge. Victoria captures an element of capriciousness and spontaneity in each of her pieces, attesting to the unpredictable imaginative depths of abstract art.

Daisy Cook works with oil paint and collage to create her geometric abstract paintings. Often incorporating elements of landscape painting into her compositions, she references the interactions between land, sea and sky in her angular shapes. Daisy primarily adheres to a pale and neutral palette, characterised by pale blues, light greens and misty greys. When planning her works, Daisy uses photography as a reference point, however her final artworks capture imagined places.

Kotaro Machiyama is a Japanese artist based in Tokyo. Merging an illustrative approach with an abstract style, Kotaro seeks to transport the view to another realm with his work. His paintings are made using acrylic paint, allowing him to create saturated blocks of vibrant colour, sharp lines and flat shapes. Kotaro first drafts his paintings in photoshop before executing them in paint.

Mixed media artist Andrew Crane creates abstract paintings which combine a unique approach with unusual materials. Crane uses a mixture of cement and varnish to cover the canvas, before embellishing the surface with oil and acrylic symbols. The combination of colour washes and typography creates a visual poem, with letters and numbers becoming clues to be deciphered. In Scrawling (2023), tangled letters are etched into the surface of the canvas suggesting a cave painting or modern pavement.

British artist Damien Hirst seeks to bring conceptualism to a wider audience and he has had many successful art exhibitions, notably at the Tate Modern, where he was the most well-received solo exhibition in Tate history. Damien creates lively abstract paintings, such as Spin Painting for example, using particularly vibrant colours.

Contemporary artist Matthew Dibble brings a unique energy to abstract modern art, exploring the interplay between inner and outer states. His bold, dynamic paintings are characterised by evocative colours and expressive gestural marks, offering a fresh and introspective take on abstraction.

The Benefits of Collecting Abstract Paintings

Abstract paintings provide more than visual intrigue; they offer an emotional and intellectual connection to art. Their open-ended nature allows viewers to interpret and engage with the artwork on a personal level, making them a versatile choice for any interior.

Abstract art also offers a timeless aesthetic, effortlessly complementing both modern and traditional spaces. Collecting abstract paintings is an excellent investment, with many works appreciating in value over time. Whether you’re drawn to vibrant, energetic compositions or serene, minimalist pieces, abstract art provides a powerful way to enhance your collection and express your individuality.
