Cody Choi is a renowned dance photographer who often captures dancers mid-air to reveal their energy and strength. Choi’s dancers hang suspended, with their bodies, hair and clothes contorted into varying shapes. In works such as Dancer: Flora #2 (2016) Choi incorporates flour into the shot to make the movements of the dancer more visible. The flour shrouds the dancer as it floats in the air, tracing her graceful movements to create an almost ethereal aura.
Former MTV journalist Tabitha Soren creates profound figurative photographs. Tabitha is particularly interested by mental health and the human mind, and she uses this passion to make intense artworks that have been exhibited in many spaces. Tabitha Soren is the object of solo exhibitions, her most recent one being at the Jackson Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia.
Figurative Art
Figurative art is defined as any art form that takes reference from and holds a resemblance to the real world. It became an important term during the rise of abstract art, to distinguish pure abstraction from realism. The term is particularly related to representations of the human form.
The human form has always been a source of inspiration for artists and a challenge for photographers, as the body can act as a powerful tool for exploring the human psyche.
Before the development of photographic editing technologies, it was much harder to manipulate images or even capture movement. Today, advanced technology allows photographers greater freedom to explore the human form.
