A Short History of Abstract Paintings

At times, the abstract and the figurative collide and in Cumulus, Victoria shows a dramatic pairing of abstract colour and space from which mysterious figures seem to emerge. Daisy Cook works with oil paint and collage to create her geometric abstract paintings. When planning her works, Daisy uses photography as a reference point, however her final artworks capture imagined places.

Kotaro Machiyama is a Japanese artist based in Tokyo. Merging an illustrative approach with an abstract style, Kotaro seeks to transport the view to another realm with his work. His paintings are made using acrylic paint, allowing him to create saturated blocks of vibrant colour, sharp lines and flat shapes. Kotaro first drafts his paintings in photoshop before executing them in paint.

Mixed media artist Andrew Crane creates abstract paintings which combine a unique approach with unusual materials. Crane uses a mixture of cement and varnish to cover the canvas, before embellishing the surface with oil and acrylic symbols. The combination of colour washes and typography creates a visual poem, with letters and numbers becoming clues to be deciphered. In Scrawling (2023), tangled letters are etched into the surface of the canvas suggesting a cave painting or modern pavement.

British artist Damien Hirst seeks to bring conceptualism to a wider audience and he has had many successful art exhibitions, notably at the Tate Modern, where he was the most well-received solo exhibition in Tate history. Damien creates lively abstract paintings, such as Spin Painting for example, using particularly vibrant colours.
