The History and Development of Graphic Art

Graphic art originates with early human expression, such as prehistoric cave paintings, graphic art has a rich cultural history. As societies advanced, so did graphic art. In the medieval period, graphic art expanded through illuminated manuscripts, where monks adorned religious texts with intricate, colourful illustrations. Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press was a pivotal moment, enabling the widespread reproduction of text and images.

The 19th and 20th centuries introduced lithography, photography, and eventually screen printing, which broadened the possibilities for graphic artists. By the late 20th century, the rise of computers revolutionised the field, ushering in digital graphic design. Today, graphic art spans traditional and digital techniques, flourishing in fields like advertising, web design, and illustration.

Some of the leading graphic designers today are known for their unique styles and contributions to fields such as branding, typography, and digital art. Jessica Walsh, co-founder of Sagmeister & Walsh, is known for her bold, colourful designs that have been featured in high-profile projects with MoMA and Adobe.

Our collection has a variety of unique graphic artworks for home décor. British artist Victoria Topping works in mixed media and digital processing to create layered imagery that is rich in colour and design. Topping is inspired by music, from 70s Jazz and Soul to Gospel and Blues. Wish You Were Here (2021) references the Pink Floyd song through a vibrant, electrifying, psychedelic landscape.

Aerial photographer Tommy Clarke uses minimal processing to create dynamic compositions of landscapes from a unique and unfamiliar perspective. By carefully selecting the compositions of his photographs, Clarke’s seascapes, such as Tributaries (2016), begin to appear as purposefully designed graphic artworks. Undulating linear, textural and colour combinations flow through one another, imitating the flow of ink across a page.

French artist Remi Delaplace is known for his minimalist geometric compositions. Merging architectural forms with abstract metallic patterns, Delaplace’s artworks create an aura of retrofuturism. In Regard Convexe (2015), linear patterns imitate the effect of light glancing across metal, as mountainous forms combine urban and natural.

Likewise, for art which employs repetitive shapes and structures, consider the work of Morgan Paslier. Luminous, hypnotic shapes come together in Paslier’s sculptural work, creating amorphous, molten orbs. In Abstract-0144 (2023), the mesmeric shapes are interrupted by a shattered glass effect, morphing the familiar forms into an entirely new composition.
