The History of Geometric Abstract Art

Geometry has a long history in Islamic art, where intricate repeating patterns symbolise the vastness of creation and spirituality. In South African culture, Ndebele art features bold, colourful patterns with symmetrical shapes, often painted on homes – an important facet of cultural identity. Emerging in the early 20th century, geometric abstraction sought to challenge representational art by focusing on colour, form, and composition.

One of the pioneers of geometric abstraction, Kazimir Malevich, was a Russian artist who founded the Suprematist movement. His work explored pure abstraction, using simple geometric shapes as a means of conveying unadulterated artistic feeling. Malevich’s Réalité peinte d'un joueur de football (2018) is a unique and affordable geometric abstract print, ideal for collectors of modern abstract art.

Another key figure is Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist who developed De Stijl, a movement rooted in a reduction of form to straight lines and primary colours. Iconic works such as Composition en Rouge, Jaune, Bleu, Noir (1921) influenced the evolution of abstract art.

Geometric abstraction played a crucial role in modern art, with these artists pushing the boundaries of form and colour, laying the groundwork for Minimalism and other contemporary movements. In the United States, for example, Frank Stella was a pioneering abstract expressionist whose work layered bold geometric shapes with vivid colours. Artworks like Jundapur (1996) in the Rise Art collection are a rare example of Stella’s contemporary abstract prints.

Begin by exploring the work of Prague-based artist Lucie Jirku, who combines a flat, geometric style with soft natural forms – hills, forests, and birds. Works like In the Mountains (2021), use layers of painted shapes and lines to create a soft, undulating landscape. The carefully composed artwork builds an abstract scene that feels comfortingly authentic.

Similarly, Amelia Coward uses strands of ombre paint to evoke natural scenes. Her painting Abstract Stripe Landscape (2024) combines geometric forms to create the optical illusion of rolling hills, verdant greenery, and bright blue sky. Working with vivid neon paint, Coward’s work brings a contemporary twist to both Geometric and Op Art styles.

Finally, for something slightly different, why not explore some modern geometric abstract sculptures ideal for home décor. Metal artist Marie Guerrier creates intricate and evocative sculptures inspired by everything from plant life to outer space. Astronome II (2024), for example, is a whimsical take on a solar system, with layers of metal circles evoking a series of planets.
