The History of Geometric Abstract Art

Geometry has a long history in Islamic art, where intricate repeating patterns symbolise the vastness of creation and spirituality. In South African culture, Ndebele art features bold, colourful patterns with symmetrical shapes, often painted on homes – an important facet of cultural identity. Emerging in the early 20th century, geometric abstraction sought to challenge representational art by focusing on colour, form, and composition.

One of the pioneers of geometric abstraction, Kazimir Malevich, was a Russian artist who founded the Suprematist movement.
