A Short History of Collage

Collage emerged as an innovative art form in the early 20th century, pioneered by artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque during the advent of Cubism. The term derives from the French Papiers collés, meaning “pasted papers”, reflecting the technique of assembling diverse materials to create dynamic compositions.

From Picasso’s Still Life with Chair Caning to Kurt Schwitters’ Merz works, collage quickly evolved as a medium for experimentation, challenging traditional notions of fine art. Later, artists like Hannah Höch of the Dada movement used photomontage to critique societal norms, while modernists such as Henri Matisse explored collage through vibrant cut-outs, including his famous Blue Nudes.

Today, collage remains a versatile medium, spanning traditional, digital, and mixed-media approaches. It continues to offer artists a platform for bold expression and innovation.

Collage For Sale on Rise Art

Rise Art’s collection features an impressive variety of collage works by contemporary artists, each offering a unique perspective on this timeless medium.

Have a look at the work of British artist Alexandra Gallagher, whose stunning, dream-like multi-layered collages draw on issues of feminine identity and sexuality. Her use of geometric shapes and flowers define her pieces, giving them a strikingly modern appearance while simultaneously evoking a Surrealist style.

The nostalgic work of Australian-born Kareem Rizk. Rizk has cultivated a highly distinctive style of collage over his years as a mixed media artist which has gained him recognition on an international scale. Nostalgia plays a key role in his beautifully warm-toned works which feature vintage materials such as postcards and book clippings to transport you back to a time period you may have never even lived in.

Browse the work of Robert Pereira Hind whose unique works change in appearance as they mature with time. His mixed media series Out of Eden evolves in colour as it oxidises over time, and the moody sky backdrops of these pieces will bring colour and depth to any setting.

The intriguing collages of David Hockney such as Graffiti Palace, N.Y. Dec. 1982 might spark your interest if you are interested in urban landscapes. In this artwork, David Hockney plays with the rules of symmetry and atypical forms, giving the backdrop a curved shape.

Step into RYANTOWN by discovering Rob Ryan’s whimsical and vibrant collages. Mixing typography and papercut details, Rob Ryan creates mystical and vivid artworks that do not shy away from powerful messages such as Fight For The Life Of Your Art, encouraging us to persevere in art despite the difficulties!

Discover the works of street art legend Invader, who creates pixelated artworks inspired by the style of 8-bit video game. You might have seen his installations in more than 60 cities in 30 countries around the world, but you too can get an Invader work in your home! Collages such as Invasion Kit 13 Made In Japan, Invasion Kit 12 Home and Invasion Kit 9 Hypnotic Vienna will remind any street art fan of Invader’s signature style.

Matthew Dibble’s collages stand out for their bold exploration of form and texture. His dynamic works merge fragmented figurative forms with gestural abstraction, creating compositions that balance spontaneity with structural harmony. In Dormant Cipher (2024), Dibble fuses architectural elements and anthropological artefacts, inviting viewers to decode the layers of meaning within his intricate photomontages.
