The History of Digital Photography in Art

Digital photography emerged as a transformative medium in the late 20th century. Reshaping both art and photography, it emphasised creativity through the new technology of the camera. Developed in the 1970s with Kodak’s creation of the first digital sensor, digital photography allowed for immediate image manipulation, pushing the boundaries of traditional photograph processes.

Among the most notable pioneers of digital photography is Cindy Sherman. Sherman manipulates her self-portraits, both physically with costume, makeup and collage, as well as with digital tools. Her celebrated series, Untitled Film Stills (1977 – 1980), sees Sherman portraying various female stereotypes inspired by 1950s-60s cinema, exploring themes of gender and representation.

By the 1990s, camera developments and editing software like Adobe Photoshop allowed artists not only to capture moments with greater accuracy but alter minute details. Andreas Gursky, for example, is a German photographer known for his large-scale, digitally enhanced photographs. In Rhein II (1999) the artist used digital manipulation to transform a landscape into a minimalist view of reality.

Meanwhile, Jeff Wall is known for his staged, carefully constructed images. A Sudden Gust of Wind (1993) depicts a tableau of people reacting to a breeze scattering a sheet of papers. The artwork blends elaborate production with image enhancement, mimicking the effect of painting and capturing a fleeting moment. Digital photography remains a versatile tool for artists, offering endless possibilities to explore narrative, aesthetics, and conceptual ideas through art.

Self-taught photographer Steve Drevet uses his technical skill to mimic traditional still life painting. Using a combination of careful set-dressing and cinematic lighting, photographs like Suspension (2021) create an in-between reality. Two vases and a selection of fruit reference fine art painting while the light’s effect on glass imbues the composition with a surreal, aquatic effect.

Dutch artist Paul Brouns is known for his graphic architectural photos. Drawn to the abstract elements of architecture, photographs such as Blue Fugue (2019), capture the rhythm of the architectural landscapes through overlapping windows and walls. Concentrating on the details of an isolated segment of a building, each image offers a lyrical rendition of architectural structures, presenting them as carefully designed urban tapestries.

For an editorial approach, explore the work of Jenny Boot, a former fashion photographer whose emotive, painterly portraits combine technical expertise with narrative craftsmanship. Flapper Girl (2022), for example, gives a familiar historic portrait a contemporary twist, with stylised costume, makeup and high resolution.
