Diptychs and triptychs first appeared as altar pieces in Renaissance art. More recently, these "non-standard" formats have been re-appropriated by artists such as Andy Warhol in his iconic "Marilyn Diptych", or Mark Rothko's monochrome diptychs in the Rothko Chapel.
