The History of Geometric Abstract Art

Geometry has a long history in Islamic art, where intricate repeating patterns symbolise the vastness of creation and spirituality. In South African culture, Ndebele art features bold, colourful patterns with symmetrical shapes, often painted on homes – an important facet of cultural identity. Emerging in the early 20th century, geometric abstraction sought to challenge representational art by focusing on colour, form, and composition.

One of the pioneers of geometric abstraction, Kazimir Malevich, was a Russian artist who founded the Suprematist movement. His work explored pure abstraction, using simple geometric shapes as a means of conveying unadulterated artistic feeling. Malevich’s Réalité peinte d'un joueur de football (2018) is a unique and affordable geometric abstract print, ideal for collectors of modern abstract art.

Another key figure is Piet Mondrian, a Dutch artist who developed De Stijl, a movement rooted in a reduction of form to straight lines and primary colours. Iconic works such as Composition en Rouge, Jaune, Bleu, Noir (1921) influenced the evolution of abstract art.
