Although initially used to identify and differentiate between plant species, botanical leaf art has evolved into one of the most popular artistic styles of today. Whether inspired by the shape, pattern or the form of the leaves, or focusing purely on a photoreal representation of a plant, leaf art often pays homage to the forms and functions of the natural world. Due to their mesmerising and unique shapes, leaves have become popular in everything from photography, to screenprints, to interior design. Whether forming the pattern of a wallpaper, or being replicated through the shapes and fittings of furniture, leaves are widely appreciated for their form and as well as for what they represent.

Marianne Nix’s iconic Chusan Palm Blue photography collection is an ode to the beauty of plants, and in particular, leaves. Marianne captures a blue wilderness in her work, with her translucent layering instilling mystery in every piece. At times resembling sun beams or echoing the shapes of living creatures, each monochrome photograph in Marianne’s collection presents a new narrative, perspective or insight into the lives of plants. For instance, Chusan Palm Blue II offers a faded and somewhat nostalgic image of plants basking in light, whereas Chusan Palm Blue XV is less obviously a photograph and follows a more graphic approach.

Simon M Smith’s paintings reflect the intricate and decorative shapes of leaves and plants. Bright colours and patterned backdrops adorn Simon’s canvases, making for ornate and other-worldly scenes. Not restricted to any particular palette, nor following a set composition, each and every one of Simon’s paintings are captivating through their singularity.

Clare Halifax works in faded tones and fine lines to achieve wonderfully detailed leaf prints. Depicting interior settings and focusing in on houseplants, Clare creates quiet scenes, in which she pays close attention to light and tone, primarily through a delicate and decisive use of line and pattern. Each one of Clare’s leaves takes on a character of its own, becoming entirely different to the next. Delicious Monster highlights the lively character of a Swiss cheese plant, whilst A Big Fan of Palms reflects the supple quality of palm leaves.
