Aidan Myers

Aidan's most recent works, made during an MA course in 2025-26, turn towards ecology, exploring humanity's relationship to nature through the histories of the invention of landscape. Collage is a central device, drawing on both his lived experience and his memory of being in nature to play with the tensions and contradictions of artificiality within landscapes, and the impact of human interference upon them.

This focus builds on paintings from 2024-25, inspired by landscapes in India, following a residency, and in Türkiye, where he worked on a project. These works look at the wider, expanded views of each landscape.

Before these, the 'Props' series approached altered landscapes, domestic gardens and public spaces from a number of perspectives, focusing more closely on specific plant motifs and close-up sections of foliage. The title speaks to the idea of nature being choreographed by humans: plants and trees become theatrical props, purposefully placed in carefully curated gardens and managed woodlands.

Landscape first emerged as a subject for Aidan in the 'Encounters' series, which followed a residency in Goa, India. There, he was struck by the impact and energy of nature, which felt significantly different from his experiences of European landscapes. Banana plants and palm motifs often appear, their large-leaf forms becoming the central focus of the paintings. This residency made him realise the significance of nature in his work.
