Hermione Carline is an English multimedia artist based in London and an oil painter inspired by contemporary abstraction, architecture, and the natural world. She stands out for her enchanting oil paintings created with stencils, both fragile and imbued with intrigue and charm.
Education and Early Career
Hermione Carline grew up in an artistic environment. Both of her parents were artists, and her aunt married the famous Stanley Spencer. Hermione Carline studied Fine Arts at Camberwell College of Arts and then successfully pursued a master's degree in textile design at the Royal College of Art.
She co-founded an international textile company called The Collection. The artist sold to major designers such as Christian Dior and Christian Lacroix and traveled around the world, spending long periods in Japan and the United States.
Hermione Carline officially turned to Fine Arts in 2004, but her love of fabric, complex cut paper stencils, and design shines through in her work.
Style and Approach of Hermione Carline
Hermione Carline's practice involves a continuous transformation. Her landscape paintings are built over several weeks through the multiple application of translucent and semi-opaque colors.
She layers transparent pigments to create three-dimensional geometric shapes and, in doing so, creates an abstract topography of passages and painted shapes that sink and rise from the canvas.
Overall, her experimental tools combine and imbue her works with an immersive and dreamlike quality, as can be felt in the stencil painting Fragrant Water, oil on birch plywood. Her overarching goal is to represent the landscape as it is experienced viscerally, sensorially, and in memory.
Exhibitions and Awards
This award-winning artist has been featured in publications such as The Times and Focus London. Recently, Hermione collaborated with the Mayo Clinic and Claridge's hotel, and exhibited at the Elena Shchukina gallery in Mayfair, as well as at The Other Art Fair and the Affordable Art Fair.
Her works are found in private collections in the UK and abroad. Alongside her artistic practice, Hermione Carline has created her business, Art-Atelier, where she offers courses for ambitious adults and young artists.
