Susanna Klein

Munich-born artist Susanna Klein explores themes of nature, time and transformation through abstraction. Inspired by the changing seasons, her work weaves together personal memories, abstraction and figurative elements.

Her creative process is rooted in experimentation and the use of pre-existing materials. Photographs, fabrics, drawings and remnants from previous works often serve as the starting point for her compositions. She also incorporates natural elements—plants, flowers, sunlight—and the influence of weather to examine notions of change and transience.

Susanna Klein’s Early Career & Style

After working in fashion and studying Communication Design in Hamburg, Susanna Klein turned to art, earning a diploma in Abstract Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2019. Since then, she has developed a distinctive approach to traditional painting techniques, combining oil, tempera and wax crayons with experimental processes.

Her practice includes cyanotype, bleaching and natural dyeing techniques, as well as hand and machine sewing on various cotton and canvas substrates. Through layering these techniques and exploring material transformation, she creates a rich, multifaceted aesthetic. Always in search of new tonalities, she also experiments with natural pigments derived from tea or coffee, reinforcing her commitment to a practice deeply connected to organic materials and sustainability.

Exhibitions

Susanna Klein has exhibited extensively in Vienna, where she is based, as well as in other cities. Her recent exhibitions include Grünspan: "Solange wir leben, strebt es in uns" (2024), Open Studio Sachsenplatz, Vienna (2023), Le Début, Salzburg (2023), 1200 Opening, Vienna (2023), One For All, All for One, Steingast Art, Vienna (2022), SAMA Kunstfestival, Schwanberg, Südsteiermark (2022), and Beyond Natural, Steingast Art, Vienna (2022).

Susanna Klein has received numerous scholarships and awards and has been featured in print and digital publications such as Les Nouveaux Riches Magazine and the Uomo Universale La Femme catalogue.
