Scent and art have the ability to evoke memories, emotions and places. What role do these sensory and emotional associations play in Verden’s approach to fragrance?

Verden is inspired by the coast where I spent my childhood summers. I came back to it after two decades and the fragrance of the unique ecosystem immediately transported me in time and reconnected me with such strong emotions. I knew at that moment that the purpose of Verden would be to reconnect each of us with nature and the sense of calm and joy that brings.

Are there particular artists, artworks or creative movements that have influenced the way you think about fragrance and the world of Verden?

Yes, the work of the impressionistic Skagen Painters captures the beauty and innocence of the Danish coast in summer. It was an unusual and quite remarkable artistic circle for its time, not least because women artists such as Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer were central to it. There was a real sense of freedom and exchange - artists living, working and observing nature together.

Fragrance is often described as an invisible art form. How do you think about scent in relation to visual art and the idea of creating something that can’t be seen?

Art sets the mood and tone of interiors and so does scent. I like to consider fragrance as an integral part of how a space makes you feel. A painting can change the atmosphere of a room through colour, light, texture and composition; fragrance works in a more elusive way, creating an atmosphere that you experience rather than see - almost like an invisible layer of the interior.
