Birgit Fechner is a German abstract painter. Inspired by the contrast between Munich and Berlin, between nature and roughness, she juxtaposes opposing emotions in her vibrant, rhythmic abstract works. Recurring themes in her work include nature and transience, beauty and destruction, color, flowers, cities, movement, and the abundance of life, which give each painting a meaning beyond aesthetics.
Birgit Fechner's Style and Practice
Her style is characterized by a collage-like technique, in which she builds up and breaks down layers of oil, glazes, and transparent materials - the latter serving to reveal what lies beneath the surface. In this way, Birgit works out the complexity of life and gives shape to the contradictions and difficulties of assessing and categorizing reality. Smaller paper and ceramic works often emerge from her paintings as well. Striking, intense colors reflect moods and intuition and testify to the liveliness and beauty of the moment of creation.
Exhibitions and Collections
Birgit has exhibited throughout Berlin. Her works are in collections such as the renowned Donna McMillan Collection, Palm Springs, USA, the Copelouzos Family Art Museum, Athens, Greece, and the Slembek Collection, Essen. Birgit studied Eastern European studies at the Free University of Berlin. She was also a member of the artist group ZYX Berlin (actions, performances, exhibitions, and projects).
