Contemporary London Printmakers

Rebecca Coleman’s visually striking renderings of the London Underground are widely recognised and her work has been exhibited in venues such as the Royal Academy. Her depictions of the long dark underground tunnels and its creatures are bold and detailed, using woodcut engravings to give her images their distinctive character.

Michael Barratt is a painter and printmaker whose appreciation of London shines through in all his prints. His work varies from being playful to questioning and references other artists and printmakers, such as his print Hokusai’s Dog.

Clare Halifax creates cityscapes that give weight to London’s plant and birdlife. Clare’s prints get their texture from a combination of design, pattern and colour which she weaves together to give her scenes their energy. Since graduating with a degree in Printed Textile Design, Clare has been commissioned by art galleries like the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Laura Jordan’s work features thought-provoking social commentary in her detailed cityscapes. Inspired by urban spaces, people and the way they interact with their surroundings, Laura’s prints of London explore the way the city has been constructed and built up.

Kristjana S Williams’ cityscapes are inspired by nature and her technique involves layering elements to mirror the symmetry in all living things. Vibrant and dream-like, she fuses exotic birds, plants and butterflies with some of London’s most iconic symbols. Her work can be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum, in galleries nationally and internationally and most recently, on the cover of Coldplay’s live album A Head Full of Dreams.

Influences of London Prints

Artists from all walks of life and working in a range of mediums use their practice to show London in all its complexity. From art-deco, through to impressionism and pop-art, our prints explore the London undergrounds, it’s parks, bridges, moods and monuments. London prints used to be synonymous with mass produced prints of the city’s skyline, but now city lovers can buy prints of London without having to travel to London to find unique and original renderings of the city.

London isn’t only home to some of the most prominent artists of historical times, it continues to attract, inspire and produce artists who innovate and break new ground. It’s no wonder that so many artists take to exploring the city, whether it’s via drawing, painting or print.

To this day, artists from around London still love to set up their easel in public places to paint scenes of the city in all its hues. And with woodcut, linocut and screen printing studios dotted throughout the city, London and international artists continue to recreate the city that inspires everyone that passes through it.
