Brazilian artist Gustavo Amaral creates paper collage using photographs. His arrangements interrogate the human body alongside the tormented human psyche. In his collage A História de Lily Braun sexualised flashes of a female body are layered on top of one another, as a faceless figure seems to despair with her head in her hands. The title is a nod to German feminist, Lily Braun, turning the piece into a reflection on the conflicting expectations of women in contemporary society. The fragmented, geometric landscape against which the woman kneels reflects what is happening behind those hands; a portrait of confusion and inner turmoil.
Artist duo Chin Keeler and Emma Tornero – who go by the name Keelertornero – use paper collage to distort images of famous figures by replacing their heads with bizarre alternatives; filing cabinets or fish. The pair call this a “a theatre of illusions and trap doors where a fisherman from the Dutch island of Terschelling can rub shoulders with the actor John Wayne trapped inside the body of a stag trying to escape his future by becoming the son of architect Mies van der Rohe.”
