Famous New York Artworks

Like many cities around the world, New York has been a central hub for artistic innovation over the decades. While cities such as Paris and London have a long history of cultural output, the Big Apple has inspired many artists as a symbol of burgeoning modernity. Artists have been moved to create everything from carefully hand-painted New York city scenes to dynamic, vivid photography.

One of the most recognised New York artworks is Broadway Boogie Woogie by Piet Mondrian (1943). As a newcomer to the city, he was inspired by boogie-woogie music, a genre of blues, as a parallel to the organised chaos of the city. Using blocks of primary colours along straight lines to resemble the city’s streets, his painting tracks the rhythm of movement through the city.

Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks (1942) is another iconic New York artwork. Set in an imagined late-night diner, the isolation of the figures within the urban landscape reflects a mood of loneliness, offering a melancholy snapshot of life in the city during this era.

In contemporary art, Yvonne Jacquette has created the quintessential painting of twinkling city lights with her aerial landscape East River View with Brooklyn Bridge (1983). Her sweeping portrayal of the glinting lights and winding river at night captures the flowing energy of the ‘City That Never Sleeps’.

Tom Voyce is a British painter who, like many artists around the world, has found inspiration in the streets of New York. The artist’s work centres places of transit, capturing the fleeting in-between moments of the city. Towards Brooklyn Bridge 2 (2023), captures the approaching landmark as seen from a speeding train, combining accuracy and abstraction with the expanse and constraints of the city.

Cody Choi is a contemporary photographer and choreographer known for his dynamic portraits of dancers in famous locations around the world. New York #2 (2022), captures the extraordinary athleticism of a dancer mid-leap, surrounded by the stunning architecture of the Brooklyn Bridge. You can also explore Choi’s figurative portraits set in London – from St Paul’s Cathedral to Hampstead Heath.

For a more abstract approach, consider the work of award-winning artist Ashley Hanson, who combines traditional Colour Field techniques with raw and evocative line work. City of Glass 2 (Hotel Harmony) (2011), combines bright planes of orange and red with a detailed view of the city from above – mixing dynamic colour with complex feelings of isolation.
