Georgina Clapham

Georgina Clapham is a British figurative artist. She engages with storytelling and theatricality in her life-size portrait and tableau paintings. The artist draws from the archetypal narratives in Greek Mythology and Folklore and compositions from the Early Modern European period.

Georgina Clapham’s Style and Practice

Georgina often refers to Old Master compositions, principally of nobility or mythological subjects. The artist also combines historical symbolism with contemporary fashion and costume, drawing the viewer into the present. Georgina blends the natural with artifice, curating a balance between beauty and grotesque. The artist also frequently documents the work of new-generation artists and designers challenging industry expectations and reintroducing outmoded, historical, or non-gender conforming dress into their everyday ensemble. She hopes to portray the psychological power of clothes to transform and embody the inner world of her subjects and take viewers on a journey into new realms.

Exhibitions and Accolades

Georgina studied at the City and Guilds of London Art School and Glasgow School of Art in Painting and Printmaking. In 2015, she received the Richard Ford Award Travel Scholarship to Prado, Madrid. Georgina has exhibited her work across the UK; selected shows include the Royal Scottish Academy, RSA: New Contemporaries, Edinburgh, The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Glasgow, and The Aon Community Art Award, London - where she received a bursary for Most Promising Artist. In 2018, Georgina held her debut solo show, Mythologies and Metamorphoses, at Triumph Gallery, Moscow. She also works on commissions, recently designing custom painted gloves in collaboration with Fashion Designer Dilara Findikoglu for her SS2020 London Fashion Week collection.
