Billy Childish cofounded the Stuckism movement that champions authenticity in art.

Born under the name Steven John Hamper, this Jack of all trades rebranded himself as Billy Childish when he began his artistic career. Billy has gone from success to success, excelling himself in the fields of music, writing and, of course, visual arts. In the art world, he’s best known for his Expressionistic Prints and Paintings that defy conventions, communicating his free-spirited way of thinking. He also co-founded the Stuckism movement along with Charles Thomson, promoting figurative painting and authenticity in art.

The Life and Work of Billy Childish

Billy Childish was accepted to study at Saint Martin’s School of Art, but was famously expelled due to unruly behaviour. This sense of rebellion runs deep in his work, which is both subversive and challenging for the viewer. His early exit from education never held him back, however, and he has since been exhibited in major art shows and exhibitions ranging from the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, White Columns Gallery in New York and even a temporary exhibition at the Regent’s Park Tube Station.

Publications and Projects

Billy’s Prints and Paintings have attracted attention across the globe, with features in important publications such as the Financial Times and the punk rock record label Damaged Goods. He has been prolific in other art forms, bringing out countless records, founding an independent press and writing his own poetry books - to name but a few things.
