Ludovic Dervillez

Ludovic Dervillez questions gesture, space, and the relationships between interventions. He does not seek to connect everything or to solve everything. Painting is constructed in action, through often quick, dry, and direct gestures. He works through successive decisions, seeking the right balance between the elements, their density, and the space they occupy. He does not seek the virtuosity of gesture. What interests him more is a form of detachment that allows the action to remain free, fluid, and precise. Some signs are affirmed, others almost secondary. They do not necessarily need to respond to each other or form a perfectly unified whole. He thus seeks to preserve an open painting, taut but never frozen, which gives the viewer a sensation of circulation and freedom.

Born in 1973, Ludovic Dervillez graduated from the ESAD of Reims in 1995, where he also taught. His work has been presented in France and abroad, notably in Paris, London, Lille, Berlin, Heidelberg, Huddersfield, and Perth. He founded and directed La Grange Gallery, an independent space dedicated to contemporary creation.
