The painting of Ludovic Dervillez is based on the precision of each intervention. The intensity comes less from the abundance than from the way lines, colors, masses, and voids coexist and respond to each other.
Working primarily on raw canvas, he constructs his works through a succession of gestures, revisions, and movements. Charcoal, graphite, oil paint, fat chalk, aerosol, or even ballpoint pen reveal different temporalities. His paintings alternate between dense areas and more stripped-down spaces. Some interventions assert themselves, while others remain discreet, fragmentary, or at a distance. These variations in presence give the whole its rhythm and tension.
Born in 1973, Ludovic Dervillez graduated from the ESAD of Reims in 1995, where he also taught. His work has been presented in France and abroad, notably in Paris, London, Lille, Berlin, Heidelberg, Huddersfield, and Perth. He founded and directed La Grange Gallery, an independent space dedicated to contemporary creation.
