Lino Prints For Sale

Explore our selection of limited edition lino prints for sale. Lino prints are a form of relief printmaking where designs are carved into linoleum sheets, inked, and then pressed onto paper to create bold, textured images.

Our collection of contemporary linocut prints for collectors has been carefully selected by our curatorial team. Start with our selection of Illustrative lino prints, which combine familiar subjects and landscapes with distinctive styles and whimsical compositions.

For a more abstract approach, explore our collection of geometric lino prints, which reinterpret their subjects with linear patterns and shapes, combining modern aesthetics with established technique.

The History of Lino Prints

Lino printing emerged in the early 20th century. Linoleum, initially used as flooring, was discovered to be an ideal medium for printmaking due to its smooth, soft texture, which is easier to carve into than wood, allowing sharp, clean lines. Artists quickly adopted the method for its versatility and affordability, especially during a time when art materials could be costly.

The technique was popularised by the German Expressionists, particularly members of Die Brücke (The Bridge) group, who saw it as an extension of the traditional woodcut. They used printing to convey raw, expressive energy, stemming from the act of carving and gouging into the surface of the wood or lino.

Later, in the 1950s, Pablo Picasso elevated lino printing, creating complex, multi-coloured linocuts that brought widespread attention to the medium. Evolving the work of the Expressionists, Picasso’s lino prints showcase a modern fluid linework that develops into abstracted forms. Explore rare Picasso landscape prints, such as the evocative The Grape Harvesters (1959) on Rise Art.

Eric Durant is known for his illustrative style and ability to create powerful, vibrant coastal scenes. Waves crash across and even exceed the edges of the print in Blue VI Wave (2013). Both playful and intense, Durant’s style captures the sublime intensity of the ocean with detailed care and technical ingenuity.

Kit Boyd is likewise known for his evocative landscapes in an illustrative style – exploring nature as a refuge from the modern world. Nature Boy (2021) is a psychedelic rendering of solitude found in nature. Layers of swirling trees as well as undulating flora and fauna create a secluded nest for a figure at the centre of the print, evoking a feeling of security.

For something a little different, explore the work of Bianca Maccall. Maccall’s minimalist architectural prints are urban but nonetheless intimate, capturing fleeting moments of emptiness in the city. The unsettling Hotwells (2020), for example, takes the simple subject of a tower block at twilight and creates an otherworldly abstract print, layering vivid colours that emerge from the dark.
