Abstract photography invites us to look again. It reconfigures the everyday, distorting shapes, blurring references, and leaving just enough behind to ignite the imagination. What might have been a figure, a reflection, a shadow, becomes pure sensation. At Rise Art, we celebrate this visual ambiguity — a space where emotion speaks louder than object.

Our collection brings together artists who challenge perception through image-making. Some lean toward soft-focus minimalism. Others explode the frame with texture and colour. But all share one ambition: to transform the way we see, using photography not as documentation, but as art.

Behind the Lens: Contemporary Abstract Photographers

Sven Pfrommer brings a multidisciplinary approach that bridges photography, painting, and printmaking. His compositions are layered and tactile, often echoing the expressive gestures of abstract painting. In some, the human form appears only as a trace — blurred, repeated, fragmented — dissolving into pattern. In others, architecture and movement collide to form near-geometric harmonies. His work pulses with energy, but never loses its sense of control.

Jo Holland develops luminous, meditative compositions using both analogue and digital techniques — often without a camera. Her images, rooted in repetition and reflection, echo the structure of mandalas and the experience of meditation. Based in London, her practice is deeply inspired by light, nature, and a spiritual connection to the act of seeing.

British photographer Paul Coghlin creates refined, emotive compositions that blur the line between photography and painting. Based in Suffolk, he explores the intangible through form and atmosphere. His work has earned him over 50 international awards and featured in major exhibitions, from AIPAD in New York to the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

These artists — and many others in our selection — push the photographic medium beyond its traditional limits. Their abstract photographs blur the lines between mediums, using the camera as a tool for creation, not reproduction.

A Brief History of Abstract Photography

The history of abstract photography is, in many ways, a story of rebellion. At the turn of the 20th century, as painting began to drift away from representation, photography followed — slowly, then decisively. Artists like Alfred Stieglitz and Man Ray used the camera not to document, but to experiment. With techniques like solarisation, multiple exposure and intentional blur, they gave shape to the invisible.

Through the decades, abstract photography has remained a space of freedom. Whether in the hands of modernist pioneers or digital contemporary photographers, it offers a territory where control and accident coexist — where an image can resemble a painting, a sculpture, or a dream. Today, artists continue to expand the field, combining analogue processes with cutting-edge digital photography to create artworks that defy categorisation.

Choosing and Collecting Abstract Photography with Confidence

Every photograph brings a certain mood into a space. In the world of abstraction, that mood becomes even more fluid, open to interpretation. Some images bring softness and stillness. Others stir a kind of visual energy — a pulse that plays with light, movement, or rhythm. Some images play with contrast — soft gradients, bursts of colour, or deep black and white compositions that emphasise form over con

Rather than offering a literal subject, abstract photography creates a space for reflection. It invites you to slow down, to follow a line or a shadow, to find your own meaning in the composition. That intimacy is often what makes a piece resonate over time.

At Rise Art, we believe that collecting starts with that connection. Our selection includes limited edition photographic prints, signed by the artists and printed on premium materials, with certificates of authenticity. These are contemporary artworks designed to live with you — to grow with your space and reflect your evolving eye.

Whether you're just starting your collection or looking for a striking new addition, you'll find abstract photographs at a range of prices, curated with care and insight.
