About figurative collage
Figurative collage is a style that combines a range of materials to create art that responds to the human body. Collage was developed throughout the 20th century, marking for an innovative and exciting approach to modern art. The term ‘collage’ was coined by Cubist artists Picasso and Braque from the word ‘coller,’ meaning ‘to glue’ in French.
Following in the footsteps of Cubism, Dada and Surrealism saw the experimentation of figurative collage, with artists such as Hötch and Breton adopting the cut-and-paste technique to reassemble photographs, drawings, paper and paintings to create new pieces of art.
