More Works by Karen Stamper
Karen Stamper
Karen grew up on the east coast of Yorkshire as a happy beachcomber, drawn to the faded painted wood, scraps of gaudy plastic, brightly coloured fishing floats and nets: all sun dried, sand blasted, salted and weathered. Her father, an avid sailor, built his own boat from scratch cutting, glueing, screwing and painting with care. Karen’s family were practical, things were repaired, repainted, remodelled and reused. As the “arty” one, she was given all the decorating jobs: painting shiny gloss woodwork and scraping and peeling back wallpaper. Karen loved the layers - the thrill of peeling back to discover what lay beneath.

Karen’s work is very much process led, she constructs and deconstructs with layers of paper and paint to make irregular shaped abstract collage paintings. She continues to take her inspiration from the worn and once loved, the humble detritus already marked with the passing of time. She is drawn to traces left behind by time and human hands, the unintentional marks that speak of practical fixing. The physicality of layering, cutting, distressing, dissembling becomes integral to each of her composition’s character and personality. But, increasingly Karen feels, as she layers up and reveals, she is exploring more about how much we patch and conceal the stories in our lives.
