Linda Coppens
Belgian artist Linda Coppens creates abstract paintings that emerge through a process of discovery rather than from a predetermined image. Working through successive decisions, revisions and responses to what is already present, she allows structure to develop gradually, inviting viewers into paintings that continue to reveal new relationships over time.

Born in 1956, Linda has been passionate about art from an early age, though she pursued her artistic path more fully later in life. After completing an MA in Psychology, she studied Drawing and Painting at the Art Academy in Liedekerke (Belgium), where she developed her focus on abstract painting. Her background in psychology continues to shape the way she thinks about perception. Rather than experiencing the world as a complete picture, we retain fragments, impressions and connections-a perspective that continues to inform her work.

Linda Coppens does not begin with an image in mind. She begins with a surface that offers possibilities rather than answers. Each painting develops through a sequence of decisions in which marks remain, disappear or return in unexpected ways. As the work evolves, every decision changes the possibilities for the next one, allowing structure to emerge through attention, revision and response to what is already present.

The moment that interests her most is when a painting begins to resist her intentions. Instead of steering the work towards a predetermined outcome, she continues responding to what is already present until the next decision becomes inevitable. Her current body of work, Rhythms of the Unspoken, grows from this way of working, asking how structure can emerge through the act of painting itself.

Linda Coppens has exhibited internationally in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Senegal, the United States, Spain, Italy and Argentina. Her work is held in private collections across Europe, Asia and the United States. She currently lives and works in Spain.
