Part of the same 2002–2003 series of shore paintings, this work exemplifies Philip Maltman’s freer, more intuitive handling of paint. Here, the surface becomes a field of suspended moments—fragments of sea life, salt traces, feathers or stones—loosely sketched or smudged as if swept across the sand by wind or tide. The composition is open and breathes, with marks that feel both spontaneous and deliberate. Maltman's use of the hand is palpable, allowing the body to guide the line, the smear, the gesture. What results is not a depiction, but an evocation—of presence, of looking closely, of the quiet, rhythmic pulse of the shore.

Philip Maltman
Philip Maltman is a Scottish-born artist who now lives and works from London. He works primarily with oil paintings, exploring the ‘littoral zone’, or the shoreline where land meets water. Philip examines the form and lines of this often chaotic region, and in doing so creates a new kind of landscape painting that focuses on transitions and the constant flux of everyday life. These are not typical nature paintings in that they convey a sense of chaos and unrest, using erratic brushstrokes, paint drips and text to achieve this unsettling yet exciting effect.

Philip Maltman's paintings are incredibly accomplished, both technically and through their subject matter and composition. The artist appears to be influenced by the history of British culture. In particular, English pastoral painting of the Romantic period through to myth and modernism. The gestural strokes, use of iconography and text also tip a wink to the master, Cy Twombly.
