Natalie Ryde

Natalie Ryde (born 1981) is a London based cross-disciplinary artist and university lecturer. She is a studio holder at Crawley Road Studios, London N22. Natalie graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with BA (Hons) 2004, PG (Dip) 2005. She has been selected for multiple residencies notably as Artist-in-Residence at Kensington Palace in 2011

Working between studio practice, residencies and academic roles, the interdisciplinary nature of Natalie’s practice extends beyond the material and into the realms of public engagement, through museums and heritage sites, and education in schools, cultural institutions and university. Her passion lies in the power that art and creative making have to deepen our understanding of myriad subject areas and to enrich learning experiences. Hovering in the space between drawing and making, Natalie’s practice is in constant dialogue between 2D and 3D, representation and experience, gazing and interacting, reflection and reaction.

Recent bodies of work have focused on large-scale paintings and smaller works on paper. The repetitive build-up of woven lines in these layered drawings and paintings alludes to time on a momentary and continuing basis and as layers of history or distance into space. Drawing for Ryde is a tool for research learning and a process to contemplate, reconstruct and reimagine the structures and forces behind and influencing the lived experience.
