John Singletary (b. 1998, Chicago, Illinois) searches for a presence in his paintings. His work is involved with the invisible – his dreams, fears, and his primordial memory. His paintings, which draw inspiration from a wide range of filmic imagery, biblical stories, folk tales and myths, are projections of his subconscious. They are about longing, time, about his family, mysticism, memories that have stuck to him – about this inner world. He earned his MFA in UC San Diego’s Visual Arts program, and his BFA in Fine Arts at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. John had his inaugural solo exhibition in 2025 with Oolong gallery – his work has been exhibited at MoMA PS1, the Houston Museum of African-American Culture, and exhibited internationally. Most recently, he showed with Ward and Spielzeug gallery at Wild Project, and attended Cabin NY residency in upstate New York. John currently lives and works out of Brooklyn, New York.
