Guiselt Thaiz

Guiselt Thaiz works in painting and sculpture, developing her practice through a direct physical engagement with materials. She paints on unprimed sailing fabrics laid across the floor, using self-made pigments derived from soils collected in different places, as well as spirulina, red cabbage, and shells. This approach makes her work environmentally conscious while grounding it in the textures and transformations of the natural world, Producing artworks making virtually zero impact on the environment. Her palette recalls the shifting tones of the Caribbean Sea, interwoven with the Dominican landscape where she grew up and the German forests where she currently resides. Rooted in nature, her practice explores the idea of home, experiences of migration, and the question of how art can be produced sustainably. Born in New York City and raised in Santo Domingo, Thaiz trained in classical ballet for twenty years before turning to the visual arts. She studied at Altos de Chavón School of Design and the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK), where she received the 2021 President’s Fine Arts Award.
