Antoine Puisais born in 1975 lives and works in Cannes, France.
"Approaching the work of Antoine Puisais means understanding that for him, a successful painting is above all a painting discovered. And to discover, one must abandon all mastery in favor of accident, of error, of failure. Each painting must be experienced as a recommencement. The act of painting before the finality. What he seeks is surprise, a distance between his initial intention and the result obtained.
When he speaks of discovering painting, it is not an abstract notion. He has developed over the course of his research a unique process of transferring paint onto the canvas using matrices that act like stamps. After drying, the canvas is torn from its support and it is at that moment that it is discovered, physically.
This completely unsteady mode of operation gives way to a procession of accidents, of absences. Similar to fragments exhumed from a ruined architecture. It will then be a matter of rectifying, rethinking, doing and undoing the painting in an exercise of balance where the line, the filled and the empty each have a role to play."
