Color has always been the defining element in Frank Campion's abstract work. Color and color relationships create moods, trigger associations, and stimulate the emotions. He is also interested in exploring formal painterly contrasts. Edges are alternately very sharp or soft. Sharp, geometric forms are juxtaposed with fluid organic fields. Passages of thick pigment abut more fluid, liquid skeins of paint. In many instances, the composition itself is the intentional or rational element while the surfaces can reveal a wide variety of painterly incident. In this way, the rational coexists with the random. Order dances with chaos. And logic shakes hands with chance.
Frank tends to work in series, exploring each idea in depth.
Each series provides inspiration for the next, making the progress very organic and allowing for each series to "converse" with the last.
His work has been featured in group exhibits at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (which acquired one of his paintings), the Danforth Museum, the DeCordova Museum, and the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art. For many years he was represented by the Clark Gallery and enjoyed three successful solo shows.
Currently residing in Clemmons, NC, Frank has shown his work in Washington, DC, Wichita, KS, Charlotte, NC, and New York, NY.
His work is represented in numerous private and corporate collections.
