Kubo Novak is a visual artist who works in the universal medium of paper. His geometric designs replicate the fragmented cubist designs of the 1900s, yet Novak’s contemporary style and painstaking, hand crafted technique is beautifully unique. Cubism was developed by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in Paris around 1907. The style was not completely abstract, but artists experimented with fragmentation and the distortion of form, often depicting subjects from multiple angles and vantage points. This style is said to have been first translated into sculpture with Picasso’s Head of a Woman (1909).

In Head of a Woman the woman’s head appears to fold in on itself and is depicted from multiple points of view, with fragmented, shard like shapes protruding from the top of her head. This first example of cubist sculpture demonstrates the progressive destruction of form and the development of a new way of seeing, that exploded in the early 20th century.
