Fantasy is a broad and largely undefined subject matter which can encompass pretty much anything that the imagination can create.
A lot of fantasy art takes its roots in mythology, folklore and religion, which has influenced many fantasy creations, such as the popular Games of Thrones series. Additionally, visual artists and graphic artists often incorporate fantasy into comics for example. We can trace this trend back to one of the most seminal fantasy artists, William Blake.
Blake was an English poet, printmaker and painter who, although unrecognised in his time, is now considered a hugely influential figure in the history of Romantic poetry and visual arts. The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sun was created between 1805 and 1810 and has come to influence many graphic and fantasy artists of our time, including Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon novel and the TV series Hannibal.
