Celebrities in the History of Art

The depiction of celebrities in art has evolved alongside society's fascination with fame. Historically, rulers and religious figures were the earliest celebrities, immortalised by famous painters. In the 17th century, artists such as Diego Velázquez and Peter Paul Rubens portrayed royalty and nobility, enhancing their subjects' prestige and influence.

The modern era saw a shift towards cultural icons and entertainers. Andy Warhol pioneered ‘celebrity art’, painting portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Jackie Kennedy – reflecting both the allure and commodification of fame from a flat, neutral perspective. Warhol's work highlighted the repetitive, mass-produced nature of celebrity culture, blurring the boundaries between high and low culture. Warhol christened the individuals who starred in his films and attended his parties ‘Superstars’, dissolving the lines between fame and the everyday.

Contemporary artists who depict celebrities include Kehinde Wiley, known for his vibrant portraits of contemporary black celebrities and public figures, which reference the work of the Old Masters. He is best known for his 2017 commission to paint Barack Obama. Shepard Fairey is likewise known for his work with the former president, having designed Obama’s visionary ‘Hope’ poster in 2008.

Works of Art with Celebrities for Sale on Rise Art

We have a broad range of celebrity-inspired paintings by emerging artists in our online gallery for you to explore.

Canadian artist Peter Horvath uses mixed media collages to explore the stories and identities of Hollywood icons. His dreamlike worlds contrast references to pop culture with decadent, apocalyptic imagery. His collage Grace (2023) layers a promotional shot of American actress Grace Kelly on a galaxy background with torn film posters around her.

Likewise, Misako Street Art combines celebrities, cartoons and public figures with colourful, offbeat imagery. Her Warholian Marilyn Pop 1 (2021) layers the famous Marilyn Monroe print with acrylic and spray-paint doodles and text – building unsettling layers over the familiar image.

Latvian painter Vadim Kovalev works in oil to depict celebrities and other figures from pop culture. His large, realistic portraits expertly capture the unique personas of each subject. His painting Madonna 3 (2018), for example, shows the singer in her ‘Madame X’ persona, complete with her famous eye-patch and red lip.

If you have a photography collection, you may be interested in Arnaud Baumann. A legendary nightlife photographer, Baumann is known for immortalising Fabrice Emaer’s ‘Palace’ nightclub in Paris. Later in his career. Baumann became a master of portraiture, capturing the essence of celebrities with depth and sensitivity – from Spike Lee and David Lynch to legendary Jazz trumpeter Miles Davis.

Also working with photography, The Dangerous Minds Artists use cryptic typography, symbols and acts of destruction to add meaning to their work. I’m Worth a Million in Prizes (2018), overlays a photograph of singer Iggy Pop with dramatic gouges into the canvas. You can find more limited edition celebrity art for sale in our online gallery.
