Kotaro Machiyama
Kotaro Machiyama explores abstraction as a way of reconnecting with the simple act of seeing. He intentionally removes storytelling, depth, and clear references so that color and form can exist independently, without directing the viewer toward a fixed meaning.

He is inspired by the way a child first encounters the world, before objects are named or defined. At this stage, color and shape are experienced freely and openly. Through painting, he seeks to return to this state of direct and intuitive perception.

In the studio, he deliberately excludes recognizable figures and narrative elements. This approach allows him to focus more closely on the relationships between colors and forms. Through this process, each work emerges as a dynamic interaction of shapes, tones, and energy.

His abstract paintings are not intended to represent specific subjects. Instead, they offer an open space. They invite viewers to slow down, to observe without expectation, and to connect with their own sensations, emotions, and memories. For him, painting becomes a place where seeing is immediate, personal, and alive.

Kotaro has taken home numerous awards in Japan, including the prestigious Daikokuya Contemporary Art Award as well as the International Art & Design Visual Art Award from 6F Citizens Gallery. The artist has also placed in the top 3 at the US ARTslant Showcase Competition. Kotaro has showcased his works in group and solo exhibitions at prominent galleries in Japan and South Korea.
