Jonathan Hindson

Jonathan Hindson was born in South Africa where he lived until the age of 11. He has been in France since 1974.
From 1980, he didn’t go back to South Africa for 32 years.

Jonathan Hindson studied art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux and has regularly presented his work in France and abroad ever since. Since 2015, when he started working with galleries in South Africa, he has been back there for exhibitions and residencies on a regular basis. He is part of the SAFFCA collection founded by Pierre Lombart, and he now works with The Project Space as well as with Lizamore and associates in Johannesburg.

In his work, he has primarily addressed questions around issues of memory and belonging which enabled him to do residencies with the CNRS (French Center for Scientific Research) in Porquerolles, and also in Palestine. In 2018, he was invited to take part in the 11th Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie de Fès (Morocco).

In 2020, Jonathan Hindson started a new series of works inspired by conversations with playwrite Jean Philippe Raymond on the individual feeling of invisibility which brought about the question: can one resort to tattoo as a way of becoming invisible ?
Can one take contol of the way one is percieved, even by oneself, and what does this have to say about the social environement we all live in?
In a nutshell :

«O wad some Pow’r the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!»
Robert Burns in «To a louse» - 1786
