“Ever since my Accident paintings, which initially referred to a nuclear accident in a US silo, I have been trying to fuse the idea of nuclear power with the power of growth in nature which, although slower, explodes with unimaginable power and beauty in the smallest of events. I began to think about beautiful plants in shadowy corners and thus began a series called In Vita’s Garden which imagines little explosions of colour and shape occurring on and around a mound of earth. This of course is subjected to the rough and tumble of everyday life in the world of paint and pencil and crayon and fingers and cloths and music and words and poetry and titles and all that!”

Philip Maltman

Philip Maltman is a Scottish-born artist who now lives and works from London. He works primarily with oil paintings, exploring the ‘littoral zone’, or the shoreline where land meets water. Philip examines the form and lines of this often chaotic region, and in doing so creates a new kind of landscape painting that focuses on transitions and the constant flux of everyday life. These are not typical nature paintings in that they convey a sense of chaos and unrest, using erratic brushstrokes, paint drips and text to achieve this unsettling yet exciting effect.
