Hidetaka Suzuki

Hidetaka Suzuki is a figurative painter who explores the nature of fiction and reality in art. Born in Hokkaido, Japan, in 1986, Hidetaka completed a BFA and an MFA in Oil Painting at Musashino Art University, Kodaira. He now lives and works in Tokyo.

Hidetaka Suzuki’s Inspiration and Practice

Hidetaka is inspired by that which lies between fiction and reality but belongs to neither. He is also intrigued by the idea that there is no correct interpretation of art and imagery, only the effect of both past and present circumstances. Many of his oil paintings and portraits, based on images he has collected, explore duplicity. Recreating old and previously unseen photographs on canvas, he instils the primary shot with new visibilities and meanings. This also prolongs the life of the original moment captured. The use of playful yet delicate brushstrokes subtly calls into question the absurdity and subjectivity of our own existence and the many untruths inherent in reality.

Press and Awards

Hidetaka won the Golden Acrylic Award at GEISAI (2009) and the Shell Art Award (2013). He has since been featured in several international solo and group exhibitions. The artist recently partook in the London Paint Club’s online exhibition Together Through Painting (2021). The virtual show celebrated the power of paint to form intergenerational and transnational dialogues between artists.
