Joanna Whittle

Born in Zambia, Joanna Whittle now lives and works from Sheffield, where she primarily creates paintings and ceramics. Joanna’s work is an exploration of real and imaginary landscapes, and her use of oils allows her to create an almost illusory quality in her work, blurring the lines between reality and imagination. Elements of her work are reminiscent of romanticism, depicting structures in the process of decay and studying their relationship to their environment. In doing so, her realistic paintings deal with eternal themes such as the passage of time, history and memory.

Joanna Whittle’s Career

Joanna Whittle studied painting at two of the best institutions in London: Central Saint Martins and Royal College of Art. Since then, her figurative paintings have been featured in a number of different publications, including Time Out and Art & Cities, and she has undertaken residencies including the Freelands Artist Programme.

Exhibitions and Awards

Joanna has had a successful career of landscape painting, with countless group and solo exhibitions across the UK. Notably, her work was exhibited in the John Moores Painting Prize in 2018 and the Royal Academy in 2019. What’s more, in 2019 she was the winner of both the Harley Open Prize and the Contemporary British Painting Prize.
