Valeria Latorre

Valeria Latorre, born in 1982 in Cosenza, Italy, is a self-taught artist. Inspired by her scientific background, Valeria approaches her painting practice with continuous research, intuition and experimentation. The artist is well known for her painterly exploration of water, revealed from scientific, philosophical and visual perspectives.

Valeria Latorre’s Education

In 2013, Valeria graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) with a diploma in Scenic Art for the Theatre. Before this, though, Valeria had already gained a PhD in Statistical Genetics from the University of Calabria - Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Inspiration & Style

Valeria strongly believes in the connection between art and science. Her works display a passionate interplay between creativity and the structural behaviour of the physical and natural world. With a particular interest in the water compound, Valeria produces celestial paintings of bodies of water with photorealistic detail. There is a purity and almost empyrean quality to her works, influenced by a purposeful infusion of Japanese Wabi-Sabi.
Playing with image distortion, Valeria gives life and character to the shape and rhythm of the water. The artist pays particular attention to the interaction between water and light at a human perception level. Her paintings, which could be confused with photographs, are spiritual and awe-inspiring encounters with the basis of human life.

Projects & Exhibitions

Valeria has exhibited in solo and group shows across Italy and the UK. To name a few, EuroArt Open Studios, London, UK, (2016-17), Il Graffio Gallery, Cosenza, Italy (2015) and Lega Navale Marina, Crotone, Italy (2017), and Museo del Presente, Italy, (2011). The artist has also exhibited in Japan at Takechi Gallery, Kumamoto City (2019), and looks to go more global in the future.
