Carl's work is rooted in a longstanding fascination with the quiet, revealing people and spaces of everyday America. These portraits and environments contain a deep record of human presence. Carl's photographs have been widely exhibited internationally and are held in both public and private collections including The National Portrait Gallery and The Robert Rauschenberg Collection. He has a strong auction record with Phillips, Heritage, and Hindman auction houses. Carl is the author of 5 award winning monographs. His work has been featured at Paris Photo, Photo Saint-Germain, Photo Basel, Photo LA , and AIPAD at the Armory in New York, among others.

In 2019, Carl was a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography.
