Kate Hiley’s work is a celebration of mark making, more recently exploring the themes of nature, the arcane and where the two intersect.
Hiley encourages the viewer to feel the physicality of the works, connecting the paintings back to the body that made them and imbuing them with the freedom and energy of a sketch. Her gestural marks are impulsive, the works painted quickly and intuitively, allowing visual ideas to come up without resistance.
‘I don’t want to over think the work as I’m making it, the process of creating should bring me out of my head and into my body.’
Hiley has lived and worked in France and Indonesia, and currently resides in London, UK. She has curated exhibitions internationally and was the Co-Founder, Directer and Curator of the gallery space Le Cabinet Dentaire in Paris, France from 2015 - 2016. She has taken part in several residencies worldwide from Iceland to Italy, including the prestigious Ellen Battel Stoekel Fellowship at Yale School of Art.
