Poppelen

Born in 1987 in Paris, to an artist mother, Poppelen has been drawing since she was very young. After training at the Emile Cohl school where she learned many techniques in different fields such as illustration, sculpture, comics, animation... she specializes in painting. Since 2012, upon her arrival in Montpellier, she has returned to illustration, developing alongside painting a different but complementary universe, inspired by the "dolce vita" side of this city with an immersion in the world of her lindy hop community (swing dance from the 1920s). Through small, refined drawings combining flat areas of pastel colors and clear lines with a fine marker, she tries to capture the atmosphere of these simple little moments in life where a light, a sound, or a combination of details creates a feeling of calm and sometimes a "madeleine de Proust" effect. "Inspiration comes from my place of work. I love to settle in cafés or on their terraces, in a park, a cozy living room... Café or stroll scenes often come back. For each scene, I visualize all the elements that compose it: the softness of the air, the freshness of the shade, the oblique rays of autumn, the song of a great tit resonating in the trees, the smell and sound of rain, the scent of a undergrowth and its humid freshness, the smell of coffee and toasted bread in the morning... It's a bubble of lightness and coziness where one loves to escape." Poppelen
