Max Knoedl

Max Knödl paints landscapes that emerge somewhere between recognition and dissolution. Forests, water, mountains, and light remain present as concrete experiences, yet through color, brushwork, and rhythm they are transformed into an autonomous pictorial world.

The starting point of his painting is the landscape—not as a faithful representation of nature, but as perception. Knödl is interested in what happens when a place that has been seen changes in the process of painting: forms become condensed, colors detach themselves from their natural function, tree trunks become vertical rhythms, light becomes color, and space becomes movement.

At the same time, figuration is deliberately retained. His paintings never become entirely abstract. The tension between the recognizable landscape motif and the autonomy of painting is central to his work. The viewer may recognize a forest while simultaneously experiencing how that forest is newly created from fields of color, brushstrokes, and spatial relationships.

Knödl’s impasto, immediate application of paint makes the process of creation visible. The individual brushstroke does not merely describe an object; it possesses its own form, direction, and movement. In this way, the landscape is not simply depicted but, rather, developed through the act of painting itself.

His paintings thus move between observation and invention, between landscape and abstraction. They are less concerned with how a particular place looks than with the question of how landscape can become painting.

For Knödl, landscape is therefore not a completed motif, but an open process: a space in which color, light, movement, and memory enter into dialogue.
