  • Touria El Glaoui

Rise Art Prize Judge Touria El Glaoui says:

"What makes Lebohang’s work compelling is that she pushes the boundaries of photographic traditions by incorporating sculptural and performative elements into her process and compositions. Her work is layered drawing from personal archives (family photographs), reenacting past moments and inserting herself into these narratives in the present. She also distorts the linearity of time by exploring how history, memory and nostalgia can be altered, reshaped and rewritten, in a sense she is time traveling through her work. Lebohang’s visual language has an undeniable presence. There is a real reimagining of what the 'family portrait’ can be and the numerous ways in which one can document lived experiences. "

Photo albums are arranged as if to tell life stories and testimonies and build identities, however the image is never ‘complete’ we are only presented with visual clues that allows…
